Rau Cau Dua

Rau câu dừa- Coconut jelly
I went to eat Rau Câu Dừa or Coconut Jelly with my friends yesterday, and thought that I must write about it right away.

Although it's December already, the weather here suddenly became hot yesterday. So I needed something to cool myself down, and coconut jelly came at the right time. I've tried coconut jelly many times before, but the coconut jelly that I ate yesterday is so different. It tastes just right - not so fatty, not so sweet and doesn’t make me feel that I'm eating jelly with artificial scent of coconut. The top of the jelly is covered will ice, coconut milk and a little coffee which blend well together, giving the coconut jelly a very nice flavor: cooling and refreshing, soft and smooth… Believe me, it’s a real must-try tropical dessert!

Kem New Zealand

'New Zealand' ice cream - Kem New Zealand
People in Da Nang love ice cream - no question about that in this tropical city. But it is not easy at all to find a good ice cream shop here. This is probably because in this city where you can buy wonderful dishes which can make you full with less than 20,000VND, not so many people would want to pay more than that to satisfy the pleasure of eating ice cream. And cheap ice cream is no ice cream at all, obviously.

New Zealand Ice-cream is probably the best shop I could find in Da Nang with good-quality ice cream at quite affordable price. The shop's environment is lovely with both outdoor and indoor spaces. There are around 10 flavours to choose from, some of which are coconut, chocolate mint, banana, cốm (green sticky rice), taro, etc. My favourite flavour is coconut because there is desiccated coconut in the ice cream which is nice. As one scoop is quite big, it should be enough to order 2 scoops for one person. This shop is very crowded, even in the (Vietnamese) winter, which proves their quality, as well as the pressing demand for good ice cream shops in Da Nang.

Sugarcane juice - Nước mía
Hi everyone,

I am Ariel. From now on I’ll be a companion with Uyen on Danang Cuisine Blog. I’ve just realized that talking about food is really a good way to connect people, so i'll try to write as much as possible. Thank Uyen for asking me to help her with this blog.

My first entry on Danang Cuisine Blog is about “Nước mía” or sugarcane juice – one of my favorite drinks. As can be guessed right from its name, sugarcane juice is a sweet and cool drink that is made from sugarcane. Unlike soft drinks, sugarcane juice is a purely natural and healthy drink. Extracted from sugarcane, it is said to have clear cooling effects and is a perfect drink during hot summer days. But don’t worry that you can’t try it if you come to Danang in cold days, as this summer drink is available all around the year in Danang as well as in other places of Vietnam.

Depending on people’s interests, lemon, pineapple or strawberry can be added to make different tastes of sugarcane juice. My favorite type is sugarcane juice with lemon. In my opinion, lemon is a great complement to sugarcane juice. It helps purify the taste and makes the drink smell really nice and fresh.

My favorite place for sugarcane juice in Danang is Nước mía Viễn Đông – 47 Trần Phú. The shop has existed for more than 30 years and serves several types of Nước mía. You can also try Nước mía from street vendors along the sidewalks of Bạch Đằng Street.

Announcement #1

  12/02/2010
Hi all,

I'm very delighted to tell you that we will have another admin/writer for this blog.

There are so many wonderful dishes in Da Nang that I sometimes can't find enough time to write about (plus I tend to forget the camera every time I try new dishes). Therefore Ariel, a great friend of mine, has accepted to help me with this blog, which I can't thank her enough. We were in the same class for 3 years in high school, and we also went to the same university in Japan. Just like me, she was born and grew up in Da Nang, and we both share the same passion for our beloved city. So I really hope that you will enjoy reading the reviews from a different perspective, other than the old boring one of mine.

Please continue to support Danang Cuisine and introduce it to everyone. You have no idea how greatly your supports have inspired and encouraged me up to now :)

Thank you.
