Thit vit (Duck)

  7/23/2011

As far as I know, duck is only popular in Asian cuisines. Unlike its brother chicken, duck has a strong and somewhat uncomfortable smell. That explains why roasted duck is so popular and dominant in many Asian countries such as China, Singapore or Malaysia, because that's probably the best way to kill that strong scent. In Japan, people are foreign to duck, some Japanese friends of mine didn't even know what a duck looked like.

Vietnamese people have another way of eating duck: boiled duck. To kill the smell, we eat duck with a spicy special ginger sauce, mint leaves and unripe mango and banana. These ingredients really complement each other and together make a unique excellent dish.

In Da Nang, one of the most, if not the most, well-known duck shop is Thanh Nhan (394 Phan Chu Trinh). Despite hundreds of visits to this place, I always find myself fascinated by how the shop owner would gracefully and skilfully chop a whole duck into amazingly equal bits just in a blink. If the Olympic had a "blade dancing with a duck" game, I bet Vietnam would win its first gold medal. Besides boiled duck, this shop also serves roasted duck, interesting duck giblets salad and of course, the must-have duck porridge.

  7/15/2011

Coffee is an indispensable culture of Vietnam, and Da Nang is no exception. Along Le Loi or any other streets, big or narrow, you can easily find hundreds of coffee shops. Each one has different class, style and price. Some people enjoy sitting in a cool air-conditioned room, sipping coffee while working on their laptops. Some love garden coffee with  natural outdoor settingsBut in my opinion, what's really different, really Vietnamese that can actually be called a Vietnamese coffee culture, is "cà phê cóc" - small coffee street vendors, typical low small plastic chairs, minimum decorations, cheap price, incredible coffee. Vietnamese, no matter how young or old, like to simply sit there, a cup of coffee in front, street-watching, group-chatting or just wandering in their own thoughts.
